The Application of Oil Seals in the Automotive Vehicle

Oil seals are widely and critically used in the automotive industry, and their performance directly affects vehicle reliability, lifespan, and environmental indicators.

1.Powertrain system

1.1 Engine core seal

Crankshaft oil seal (front and rear ends)

Material: Fluororubber (FKM) resistant to high temperatures up to 200 ℃+

Technology: Double lip structure (main lip+dust lip), such as Toyota Dynamic Laser Sealing technology

Camshaft oil seal: integrated design (with phase sensor seal)

1.2. Transmission system

Input/output shaft oil seal: resistant to ATF transmission oil corrosion (HNBR material)

Shift lever oil seal: low friction coefficient design (PTFE coating)

Typical case: Volkswagen DSG gearbox adopts labyrinth type+spring reinforced composite oil seal

2. Transmission and Drive System

Hub Bearing Oil Seal

Differential oil seal

Transmission shaft oil seal

3.  Chassis and suspension system

Steering gear oil seal:

Specially designed for electric power steering (EPS), resistant to frequent reciprocating motion

Dynamic sealing force control (± 5% deviation band)

Shock absorber oil seal:

Multi level stepped structure (anti oil emulsion)

Salt spray corrosion resistance (coated metal frame)

The distribution and function of oil seals in automobiles are as follows:

1. Engine related oil seals

Engine bottom oil seal

Located at the bottom of the engine, it mainly prevents lubricating oil leakage and blocks external impurities from entering the lubrication system

Valve oil seal

The upper end of the valve guide installed in the engine cylinder head prevents oil from entering the combustion chamber and avoids the phenomenon of "burning oil"

Front crankshaft oil seal

The crankshaft pulley or shock absorber located at the front end of the engine seals the front end of the crankshaft to prevent oil leakage

Rear oil seal of crankshaft

Located at the connection between the engine and gearbox, the gearbox needs to be disassembled for maintenance, responsible for isolating lubricating oil from transmission components

2. Oil seals in other parts

Rear axle oil seal

Located at the connection between the drive axle housing and the half shaft, it prevents gear oil leakage and protects the differential components

Camshaft oil seal

Generally installed at the front of the engine, it seals the end of the camshaft and maintains a lubricating environment for the valve system

Summary of Oil Seal Function

The oil seal forms a dynamic sealing ring through the combination structure of rubber lip and metal skeleton, which can not only block the leakage of lubricating oil, but also prevent dust and mud from entering, ensuring the long-term stable operation of mechanical components
